What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Anatomy of Organic / Natural Search Engine Marketing

One of the techniques that interactive marketers use to market a website is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The SEO marketer performs a process called page optimization. The end result of page optimization is intended to have an positive effect on where your web pages will fall within the search engine results pages when someone performs a query on a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. The results that are displayed to the user are known as Search Engine Result Pages (SERP's).

Search Engine Optimization is the process of optimizing each page for "organic" positioning, otherwise known as "natural" positioning or in other words, your "free" positioning. SEO does not, and cannot guarantee positioning and absolutely "No One" can guarantee where you will fall in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERP's) via SEO. However, there are techniques known as "Black Hat" techniques that unethical marketers can perform in order to temporarily enhance your positioning. Once the search engines realize what is happening, and they will find out, you can rest assured they will remove your listing or worse, permanently ban your website from the engine. Search engines do not like being tricked and I strongly recommend that you do not test them.

Verbatim from Google...
"We add and update new sites to our index each time we crawl the web, and we invite you to submit your URL. We do not add all submitted URL's to our index, and we cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when or if they will appear."

The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) process is designed to maximize your online presence by altering code, text, links, images, audio, and video on each page of a website with anticipation of deriving more frequent and more prominent positioning results in organic search engine result pages (SEPR's) thus improving the volume of traffic to the website.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) changes do not have any negative effect on how a website functions. Its sole purpose is to simply help search engines find and index (catalog) your webpages via spiders (a.k.a. bots) so people can find what they are searching for utilizing Google, Yahoo, Bing and many other search engines.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a systematic process that must be implemented in order to maintain a marketable website, in competition with other websites who have also implemented an SEO campaign for the same type of product, service, or information.
